Quick links: Barrayar / Cetaganda / Missions

SIGNUPS ARE NOW CLOSED

Signups will close at midnight PST on April 30th (aka whatever is in my inbox when I wake up on May 1st) so that I have a day to write up the results and the log.

For the record, you guys can absolutely take perks before signing up for a mission (provided you have the LP). If there happens to be a perk-related mission you want in on, you can slide right on under the wire there.

The last couple of weeks have been less bad, unless you count the political unease surrounding the Barrayaran Imperial succession and the murmurs of dissent in the Barrayaran camp, and the shady dealings and increasingly uncomfortable military tensions on the Cetagandan base! Everything is relative, right? Ayyy.

barrayar
The time to strike is now -- as far as Barrayaran intelligence knows, no reinforcements are on their way to the base, and they need to strike while they're still down nearly half their forces. It's the only shot they have at forcing the occupying troops to leave Vorkosigan Vashnoi and give them a chance at retaking the city -- and they're not throwing away this shot, because they might not get another one. All three camps are heavily preparing, officers running drills nearly around the clock, quartermasters taking inventory and making sure every piece of equipment is clean and in working order. But tensions are still rising within the army despite the impending mission -- while the higher command is vocally discouraging the fights that have broken out, no one has openly endorsed the outsiders except for Piotr Vorkosigan. Vorvolk and Yuri are still both staunchly in the skeptic camp at best, but Dorca does not seem to have passed a final judgment on them yet. Perhaps he's merely waiting to see how the attack on the base turns out, because for all the dissent about the outsiders, the Emperor hasn't barred Piotr from letting them participate in missions.

The political unease surrounding Dorca and Yuri's succession is a much quieter tension, plaguing only those politically savvy (or well positioned) enough to understand the situation, but if you're paying close enough attention, you'll note that Yuri's primary concern and problem isn't the outsiders. However, the complaints about the outsiders drown it out on the surface. They're especially tetchy about the outsiders who crossed over from the Cetagandan side -- they're as good as spies, as far as some of the soldiers are concerned. But even worse is letting a Duv Galeni, a Komarran, not only remain in camp but actively participate in missions. For the most part, the soldiers in camp who have known the outsiders from the start and have befriended them are sticking with them, but the half of Piotr's army that had gone with Vorvolk when they'd had to split after the location of their last camp was discovered by the Cetagandans are nearly as suspicious as the Vorbarra battalion. Hostility towards Duv and those who escaped from the Cetagandan camp is especially severe, and it's no secret that some of them would prefer the outsiders dead rather than taking up space and resources in their army, though no one has been so bold as to actually make any attempts. Falco Vorkalloner, one of the Rangers who had been in Vorvolk's half of the army, hasn't been afraid to make his voice heard, though. He's even been heard saying that he thinks someone ought to make an example out of the Komarran and demonstrate just what they think of those who would side with the Cetagandans.

But preparations for the attack continue nonetheless. A complex operation, more than any the outsiders have participated in thus far, it entails several task forces to infiltrate the base, sabotage their power supply, and, if possible, rescue Princess Sonia, although her rescue is a secondary objective. On the 15th, they attack.

cetaganda
The flower-viewing party is over, and tension settles back over the Cetagandan base, underlined by Zahal's frustration with Piotr's flat-out refusal to meet his demands, or even so much as discuss them. Given the recent guerrilla activity in Vorkosigan Vashnoi, he knows Piotr must be planning something, but with no informants left in the Barrayaran army, his intelligence is dry. All he can do is concentrate as many troops as he can afford on the city's occupation, though he doesn't leave the base totally unmanned. But he does add another thousand troops to the occupying force in Vorkosigan Vashnoi in the week before the attack on the base.

Not everyone is being sent over, though, and the transfer doesn't make for as smooth a cover as one might hope. Gail is caught on an unauthorized trip to the city while off duty, and you might hear -- or overhear -- the dressing-down he gets from his commanding officer for it,

The scientific goings on of the base are as busy as ever. The gene therapy trials, despite some…trials, continue, and Micah works feverishly on the Star Gate Project with the aid of the military's scientific divison and the exotics working as lab assistants. Although Sei is never seen outside of her force bubble, and doesn't actually travel around the base all that much, her presence seems to dominate the more civilian areas of the base, overshadowing even Diya -- although Diya is considerably less visible around the base after her altercation with Tarn.

The mood around the base is restless, but the Cetagandans are hardly prepared for the attack.

missions
MISSIONS: BARRAYAR
1) Courier +1 LP
SKILLS: DIPLOMACY, PERSUASION, NEGOTIATION
Between Colonel Vorvolk, Piotr, and Emperor Dorca, there are now three separate camps operating in coordination with one another, which means plenty of correspondence. There's some hostility toward the outsiders, but that doesn't stop Piotr from sending them off with messages. Signups are unlimited.

The infiltration team will be responsible for the initial breach of the Cetagandan base. First, pose as Cetagandans in their uniforms and face paint to get past the gate guard and disable gate security; second, find a way to disable the force screens and stunner nets around the top perimeter of the base so that other guerrillas can sneak in over the walls. There is room for up to four outsiders on this mission.

1. Agent York
2. Agent Maine
3. Duv Galeni
4. Ratchet

3) Attack: Sabotage +2 LP
SKILLS: STEALTH, TECH
BONUSES: Join the Fight, participation in January II's Power Supply Recon
After a few long months, it's finally time to put into use the information gained on the base's power generators back in January. The first objective will be to disable the backup protocol to prevent the backup generator from coming online; the second will be to disable the generators or at least do considerable damage to them. There is room for up to four outsiders on this mission.

1. Miles Vorkosigan
2. Agent Carolina
3.
4.

4) Attack: Rescue +2 LP
SKILLS: STEALTH
It isn't the primary objective of the mission, but this is a prime opportunity to try and rescue Princess Sonia -- and anyone else in need of escape. It'll be risky amidst the chaos that's sure to break out, but it's time to bring the Princess home. There is room for up to two outsiders on this mission.

1. Agent Washington
2. Lucy Preston

5) MYSTERY PLOT +3 LP
SKILLS: PERCEPTION, STEALTH, COMBAT, PHYSICAL
This is an RNG-based grab-bag mission – you don't know exactly what it'll be or how it will wind up affecting your character, but it will be exciting and plot-important! Up to two outsiders can participate, but we'll need you to sign this waiver surrendering your fate to the RNG gods.

1. Lakshmi Bai
2. Benjamin Sisko

MISSIONS: CETAGANDA
1) Cleanup Duty +1 LP
SKILLS: PHYSICAL
After the attack, the base is considerably damaged and in disarray. They're already undermanned, and until reinforcements arrive, they can use all the help they can get in cleaning up the base. Signups are unlimited.

1. Symmetra
2. Kaidan Alenko
3. Natasha Romanoff
4. Deanna Troi

2) Eavesdropping +2 LP
SKILLS: STEALTH
With all the behind-the-curtains politics going on, it's practically a crime not to go nosing around. There is room for up to two exotics on this mission.

1. Lapis Lazuli
2. Jasper

3) Hacking +2 LP
SKILLS: STEALTH, TECH
BONUSES: Comconsole Access - Restricted, Training: Advanced Technology
It's that time-honored classic -- with a twist! You've decided to try and break into the restricted parts of the base network in search of some answers, but you'll need to both avoid tripping any digital security alarms as well as avoiding patrols while using the comconsole. There is room for up to two exotics on this mission.

1. Deanna Troi
2. Kaidan Alenko

4) Defend: Interception +2 LP
SKILLS: COMBAT
BONUS: Training: Weapons
Now that they've broken through gate security and disabled the force screens and stunner nets on the upper perimeter, the Barrayarans have begun to rappel up the walls to further infiltrate the base. You're up on the upper perimeter with the Cetagandan soldiers, helping to fight them off -- or are you? There is room for up to four exotics on this mission.
CHOICE: You have a choice, up on the upper perimeter -- do you help the Cetagandans and fight off the Barrayarans, or do you surprise the Cetagandans by helping the Barrayarans enter the base?

1. Tarn
2. Julian Bashir
3. Pearl
4. Vex'ahlia

5) Defend: Force Fields +2 LP
SKILLS: COMBAT, TECH
BONUS: Training: Advanced Technology
There's an attack on the base, and everything is chaos -- and the Barrayarans are targeting the power supply. For whatever reason, it's the secondary backup generator the Cetagandans are most concerned about. There's a dedicated force field for the generator, but it needs to be activated from two separate points. There is room for up to four exotics on this mission.
CHOICE: The Cetagandans need your help, but if you sympathize with the Barrayarans, this could be a prime opportunity for sabotage -- so which will you do?

1. Symmetra
2. Natasha Romanoff
3. Whirl
