"Are they hard on you?" The soldiers, the horses, the entire war effort. For Beth, they're far enough from her home terrain that she's spent time looking at them--more importantly, spent time thinking about them. "I thought they'd help--with places to hide."

She hasn't come to the point where she looks for exits in every room she enters, but she does find herself wondering about safe places. Someday, they might have to leave this camp--or another one. Tents are made for moving, but fleeing is different from packing up. "Up a mountain" is her instinctive answer to "where should I go?"
