Working in triage, your only real job is to keep things moving and organized -- direct patients where they need to go, treat anyone in immediate need of help -- the lines between triage assistants and med techs start to blur, mostly because it doesn't matter. Although the virus isn't spreading any more quickly than your average flu, it's a nasty infection, and the symptoms are difficult to treat without proper equipment. Fevers, cough, vomiting -- the best they have for these are local medicine and the little relief supplies from Xav, which includes analgesics and synergine, as well as surgical masks and gloves for the people working triage to protect them from the airborne illness as much as possible. But if the flu turns to pneumonia, there's almost nothing they can do at that point.

medical assistance
Roll 1: Baseline success - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Save extra lives - SUCCEED
Between the village and the army, there are about 230 people. Thanks to Wash, Beth and Morgan's efforts along with the Barrayaran doctors, they manage to keep the mortality rate down to 10% among the villagers and outsiders over the course of the next couple of weeks -- only 23 influenza-related deaths.
+2 LP to Wash, Beth & Morgan

infiltration
Piotr's next move isn't guerrilla warfare -- it's psychological warfare. In order to keep Zahal and his ghem soldiers on their toes, Piotr sends several squads out to infiltrate the Cetagandan base using the intel they gathered in January so they can plant severed pieces of Cetagandan corpses all over the camp in places where they could have placed bombs to damage major facilities. Well, there are pieces of Vorhalas and Vorbataille among them, and the most prized of them all -- severed heads, of course, but scalped, because Barrayarans love to collect Cetagandan scalps. It's fucked up, I know.

INFILTRATION TEAM ALPHA: Agent Maine & Nash Latkje
Roll 1: Take out gate guards for successful entry - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Plant dead body parts and avoid Cetagandan detection - FAIL
Maine takes point in this mission, being an actual enlisted soldier under Piotr's command. Maine and Latkje don't have much trouble getting in -- after all, this isn't Maine's first time infiltrating the base -- but once they're in, the trouble starts. They only have time to plant one body part before they're swarmed with Cetagandan soldiers, and it's a nasty fight. They manage to get away, but not entirely unscathed.

INFILTRATION TEAM BRAVO: Agent Carolina & Lakshmi Bai
Roll 1: Take out gate guards for successful entry - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Plant dead body parts and avoid Cetagandan detection - SUCCEED
Carolina and Lakshmi have little trouble getting in -- they've done this before, after all -- and they might have a few close calls, but they're able to plant two body parts before it's time to bail.

Triage starts in the medbay, but they have to quarantine off another wing of the building just to make room for the rapidly growing population of infected ghem. Working in triage, your only real job is to keep things moving and organized -- direct patients where they need to go, treat anyone in need of help -- the lines between triage assistants and med techs start to blur, mostly because it doesn't matter. The virus is spreading through the base at an alarming speed -- it's airborne and no one on base has ever been exposed to it (except maybe Byerly). The symptoms are severe and while the Cetagandans have plenty of equipment, they have neither an antiviral nor a vaccine for the Barrayaran flu. High fever, vomiting, dehydration, respiratory and sinus problems run rampant, and though they have plenty in the way of synergine and analgesics, the Barrayaran flu quickly leads to pneumonia in most Cetagandan patients, and with their immune systems so completely unprepared, most patients with pneumonia die within 24 to 48 hours. The triage assistants are, at least, provided with surgical masks and gloves and antibacterial gel by the bucket load to protect them from the airborne illness as much as possible.

vaccine development
Roll 1: Develop a vaccine for the Barrayaran flu by the 17th - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Develop a vaccine with a 50% effectiveness - SUCCEED
Ratchet and Natasha work closely and tirelessly with Chief Medical Officer ghem-Naru and his top epidemiologists. Byerly, being the only person on base who's ever been exposed to the Barrayaran flu, offers up a blood sample -- blood potentially containing antibodies to this strain. Some of their testing methods are not entirely ethical, but they're able to develop a working vaccine by the 17th, one with a projected effectiveness of 70%.

eavesdropping
EAVESDROPPING TEAM ETA: Agent York & Vex'ahlia
Roll 1: Get back to quarters without getting caught - FAIL
Roll 2: Get extra intel - SUCCEED
Sneaking around during a small epidemic and in the cold is probably inadvisable, but it also means the patrols are a lot thinner. Vex and York will make their way over toward the science/medical complex -- the medbay itself probably isn't a good idea, but they want a better look at the neurological components, and they've been getting real curious -- and maybe that's reason enough to go sneaking around.

At some point during all this sneaking, they find a part from a dead body, clearly severed from a Cetagandan by the scrap of uniform, planted neatly where you might ordinarily plant a bomb. You can either take it or leave it -- it's mostly frozen, but still gross.

In the neurology labs, they'll find some brain images overlapped and highlighting certain areas, Wash and York's among them. It looks like they're studying how to augment their own neural implant technology based on the Project Freelancer tech. And while they're snooping around, they'll overhear a conversation between Diya and Amai…

Unfortunately, on their way back to their quarters, York and Vex run afoul of a Cetagandan patrol. These guys are starting to get really annoyed, with York in particular, after his participation in the recent breakout.

EAVESDROPPING TEAM SIGMA: Kurt & Lapis
Roll 1: Get back to quarters undetected - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Gain extra intel - FAIL
Lapis and Kurt don't have any difficulty sneaking around the patrols (it probably helps that Lapis has done this several times by now) -- at first. Some things have changed as the ranks have thinned with the flu epidemic, and in dodging the patrols you find yourself near one of the uterine replicator rooms -- the equipment with, evidently, they conceive and incubate babies to term. These replicators are marked with a screaming bird insignia, but nothing else they can decode. However, they do find some plastic flimsies that were clearly not filed properly -- lists, they look like. They don't have much time to look at them before they hear a patrol coming, but they definitely see Lapis's name on several lists, as well as Deanna Troi, Jasper, Darkstalker, and Lakshmi Bai. It's not evident at a glance what they mean -- they're paired only with what look like serial numbers are extremely cryptic descriptions. That's all they get before they have to bail, though, and they do make it back to the barracks undetected. While they're there, though, they overhear the following conversation...

The Handmaiden of the Star Crèche herself.
"The Handmaiden herself?" Amai's voice is hushed, awed. Diya's is decidedly not.

"She'll be here by the end of the month. We have little time."

"My lady," Amai says at Diya's clipped tone, "are you not pleased that the Handmaiden of the Star Crèche graces us with her presence? She's second only to the Dowager Empress herself…"

Diya lets out a scoff before she can even stop herself. Amai's voice sounds terse as well as confused.

"She is haut -- highest of haut, short of the Dowager Empress," Amai says fervently. "To have the Handmaiden leave Eta Ceta to oversee your research -- "

"Is to have it taken out of my hands entirely," Diya says icily. "Something this massive, this unprecedented? Why leave it in the hands of a culled haut when the Handmaiden herself could oversee something on this grand a scale?"

"But it could still be good for your career as it is now," Amai persists.

"Ghem-Soren, will you stop thinking about your career for one second," Diya snaps. It's so much less controlled than her usual demeanor. That takes effort. Considerable effort. God, she wishes her force bubble.

There's a moment of palpable silence, and then Amai says quietly, "Weren't you from the Navarr constellation?"

Were. After a moment Diya says, "We were crèchemates." The answer is short, but the silence that follows is long. She says no more, except, "We have a real timetable now, ghem-Soren. We must produce something worthy of presentation to the Star Crèche -- a show of not only competence, but brilliance. We need to make ourselves indispensable."

Well, she needs to make herself indispensable. If she can set a new precedent for their most treasured pursuit, then perhaps she can set for herself a new precedent for society.

"What about the ghem-General's deadline?"

Diya lets out a scoff of a laugh. "An empty threat. It is Haut Sei we must be conscious of." A brief silence. "We don't have much time, but everything has been too rushed. I think we've quite proven by now that a direct splice doesn't work -- nor is it a particularly appealing presentation to the Star Crèche, I think, considering it seems to have unintended neurological effects that interfered with the ba inhibitor gene. No, we need to take the time to rebuild it for ourselves. The Gems' DNA has been particularly interesting in its applications."

After that, it's time to scoot back to the barracks. At some point during all this sneaking, they find a part from a dead body, clearly severed from a Cetagandan by the scrap of uniform, planted neatly where you might ordinarily plant a bomb. You can either take it or leave it -- it's mostly frozen, but still gross. You manage to find three of them over the course of the evening.

vorkosigan vashnoi
(Note: This is only a quasi-PVP mission; each sides' rolls don’t affect the others', but it's a big city and they're there for a few days. It'd quite easy to run into one of your fellows from the other side without necessarily being detected by soldiers.)

Prince Xav knows of a Barrayar-allied Betan scientist, Doctor Micah Niadem, laying low in the district capital Vorkosigan Vashnoi for the time being, waiting for a signal from Xav so they can get off-planet. Unfortunately, Cetagandan intelligence has also gotten wind of this scientist -- renowned in the field of wormhole science. Each side is trying to make nice with the locals while tracking down wherever Micah is hiding.

(Also, the flu epidemic has definitely spread to the city.)

Miles and William have a remarkably easy time fitting in with the locals and avoiding detection -- well, so far as Miles avoids detection anywhere. The prejudice is a little less severe in the city, but let's be real -- it sort of puts a damper on their ability to squeeze information out of the locals. They only just barely get any information -- a particular district within the town, and it's hardly first-hand information, but that's about it.

Lucy and Duv have a slightly harder time blending in, but they manage it alright -- enough that they can get a little more specific information out of one of the locals. Unfortunately, it's third-hand information, so it's hard to trust -- but they have, at least, narrowed it down to a district.

(It's up to you guys to decide the details of how these go down, but if you want more direction feel free to hit me up.)
Byerly and Deanna don't have much trouble passing through the city and avoiding the soldiers -- it probably helps that Byerly is Barrayaran himself. They have the extreme fortune of running into someone with very first-hand information, who not only has a neighborhood, he has an address. Very valuable intelligence indeed, and certain to put them both in good graces.

Satya and Natasha have no trouble blending in with the locals despite their unfamiliarity. Their intelligence attempts are just as successful -- they not only manage to track down a source of first-hand information, but they get the name of the people hiding Micah.

(It's up to you guys to decide the details of how these go down, but if you want more direction feel free to hit me up.)

lab assistants
Not an event as such, nor was anything rolled, but since Natasha, York, and Symmetra have all taken the advanced perk Lab Assistant, here's what they learn from working in the labs:

NATASHA:
Natasha has mostly been working with astrophysicists and mathematics on the multifacted problem that is the design and construction of the wormhole device. Its unprecedented appearance has led to unprecedented equations to solve -- not for a jump ship passing through a wormhole, but a single human being. Necklin fields are what folds a ship into five-dimensional space and makes sure it emerges on the other side intact. To reduce this field down to the level of an individual level has not yet been solved. They’ve started with filling in the gaps in Natasha's knowledge of astrophysics in the subfield of wormhole science and five-dimensional space mathematics.

YORK:
York has been chiefly assigned to the neurology labs. He's given a crash course in wormhole science insofar as it pertains to five-dimensional space and its known and potential effects on the human brain. They elaborate on why jump pilots' neural implants are so important -- they allow the pilot to interface directly with the ships' systems and place them in a state of mind capable of navigating five-space, hence their interest in York's particular implant. Necklin field problem aside, they aren't sure if any one individual would make it through the wormhole neurologically intact without an implant.

SYMMETRA:
Satya has been assigned chiefly to work with the mechanical and aerospace engineers, looking into how hard-light technology might be used to construct sensitive equipment such as Necklin rods, though assessing the necessary length of the rods is impossible until they know how large the device itself will be. On a jump ship, the Necklin rods must run the entire length of the ship and, in order to reduce friction, are held in place by high-precision electromagnetic bearings. A part of their research at the moment is troubleshooting why the technology in Satya's robotic arm stopped working when she arrived on Barrayar.

Please comment if you have any questions! NPC starters will go up for each mission top-level with the IC log as usual, and, as always, here are the rolls for this event. All rolls are d20 unless noted otherwise; the skill ratings of 1-4 are converted into modifiers of -1 to 2. The number of people in each group is also added to the total modifier.

Also, thank you to Ana ([plurk.com profile] cuddlebug) for the lovely new Vorkosigan house colors dice, they are the BEST DICE A MOD COULD ASK FOR.

And a big special thanks also to Wyn ([plurk.com profile] minor_ramblings) for providing me with a ton of helpful information re: infectious disease and influenza so I could make this event as interesting & detailed as possible!

And don't forget to take down your new LP! As of this post, event LP is immediately granted and you can go hit up the loyalty perks page if you so choose.
