infected
Beth Greene, Agent Carolina, Agent York and Nash Latjke all have the misfortune of catching the Barrayaran flu themselves. It's horrible.
+2 LP to Beth, Carolina, York & Nash
art fair
Sonia's putting on a little art show to raise morale around the camp, and has asked as many outsiders to cooperate as are willing. Beth and Tucker both do a little singing, Lakshmi shows off some artistic embroidery, and Daryl tries to pretend that pest control is art.
+1 LP to Beth, Tucker, Daryl & Lakshmi
triage
Roll: d20 for level of success
1-5 | lost a patient, SUPER UNHELPFUL |
6-10 | maybe lost a patient, sort of helpful, maybe you did OK |
11-15 | you did pretty OK, you were helpful, gold star, maybe even saved someone |
16-20+ | you did GOOD, EXTRA GOLD STAR, saved at least one patient |
Ratchet - 4 |
Working in triage, your only real job is to keep things moving and organized -- direct patients where they need to go, treat anyone in immediate need of help -- the lines between triage assistants and med techs start to blur, mostly because it doesn't matter. Although the virus isn't spreading any more quickly than your average flu, it's a nasty infection, and the symptoms are difficult to treat without proper equipment. Fevers, cough, vomiting -- the best they have for these are local medicine as well as surgical masks and gloves for the people working triage to protect them from the airborne illness as much as possible. But if the flu turns to pneumonia, antibiotics are the only thing that can help.
field medicine
FIELD MEDICINE TEAM ALPHA: Ratchet & Miles Vorkosigan
Roll 1: Baseline success - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Save extra lives - SUCCEED
FIELD MEDICINE TEAM BRAVO: Morgan Jones & Duv Galeni
Roll 1: Baseline success - FAIL
Roll 2: Save extra lives - N/A
Ratchet finally puts his (admittedly cross-species) medical knowledge to work and, with Miles's help, manages to contribute a great deal toward getting the villagers and soldiers through the epidemic. Duv and Morgan, on the other hand, do the exact opposite of helping. Between the village and the army, there are about 207 people. Between the two teams, they don't manage to lower the mortality rate below 15%, resulting in 32 influenza-related deaths through the rest of March.
+2 LP to Ratchet, Miles, Morgan & Duv
raid: medical supplies
Times are desperate, and with the relief supplies now exhausted, the Barrayarans are back to painful basics. Piotr sends out scouts before the raiding parties, but the Cetagandans' patrols are thinned out from the flu.
RAID TEAM ALPHA: Miles Vorkosigan & Lavernius Tucker
Roll 1: Get in and out without incident - FAIL
Roll 2: Grab extra supplies - SUCCEED
Roll 3: Find anticonvulsants - FAIL
Choice: Miles and Tucker stop to aid a sick Cetagandan soldier on their way out, and it costs them a safe escape.
RAID TEAM BRAVO: Duv Galeni & Daryl Dixon
Roll 1: Get in and out without incident - FAIL
Roll 2: Grab extra supplies - FAIL
Choice: Duv and Daryl find the Cetagandans' supply of the vaccine. Duv wants to leave some for the Cetagandans; Daryl does not agree.
RAID TEAM CHARLIE: Agent Washington & Lucy Preston
Roll 1: Get in and out without incident - FAIL
Roll 2: Grab extra supplies - SUCCEED
Choice: Lucy and Wash both go for the antibiotics when it's down to the crunch.
Wow. You guys all did TERRIBLY.
No one got in and out without incident. Every team ran into patrols on their exit, and every team lost supplies in the scuffle and subsequent escape. Miles and Tucker failed the most miserably, so that fight probably didn't go well, but neither Duv, Daryl, Wash nor Lucy had an easy time of it, either. Everyone probably sustained an injury of some kind, and more than a mere scrape or bruise. Ultimately, their bounty amounts to supplies/topicals/OTC analgesics for 40% of the population, vaccine for 20% of the population, and antibiotics for 35% of the population.

Triage starts in the medbay, but they have to quarantine off another wing of the building just to make room for the rapidly growing population of infected ghem. Working in triage, your only real job is to keep things moving and organized -- direct patients where they need to go, treat anyone in need of help -- the lines between triage assistants and med techs start to blur, mostly because it doesn't matter. The virus is still ravaging the base even as they begin to inoculate the uninfected population. The symptoms are severe and while the Cetagandans have plenty of equipment, they have only just developed a vaccine for the Barrayaran flu. High fever, vomiting, dehydration, respiratory and sinus problems run rampant, and though they have plenty in the way of synergine and analgesics, the Barrayaran flu quickly leads to pneumonia in most Cetagandan patients, and with their immune systems so completely unprepared, most patients with pneumonia die within 24 to 48 hours. The triage assistants are, at least, provided with surgical masks and gloves and antibacterial gel by the bucket load to protect them from the airborne illness as much as possible.
vaccine run
Roll 1: Aid in distributing the vaccine - SUCCEED
Choice: Deanna thinks the lowly ghem soldiers should get the vaccine. Darkstalker disagrees. Talk it out, ladies.
Despite their disagreement, Deanna and Darkstalker are able to aid the Cetagandans enough that 80% of the uninfected population gets the vaccine before infection.

eavesdropping
EAVESDROPPING TEAM ETA: Natasha Romanoff & Tarn
Roll 1: Get back to quarters without getting caught - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Get extra intel - SUCCEED
In the gardens near the Grow Labs at night, Tarn and Natasha see Diya and Sei and overhear the following conversation:
Night in the gardens is soft and mostly dark, save for the small emergency LEDs along the floor and the blow of bioluminescent flora scattered here and there. The sound here is soft, too, the grow labs' equipment merely a wall of background white noise. The quiet chirping of nighttime birds feels curiously absent.

The sound here is soft, too, the Grow Labs' equipment merely a wall of background white noise. The quiet chirping of nighttime birds feels curiously absent.
The glow brightens as Haut Sei's iridescent force bubble glides slowly along the garden path, coming to hover a few meters away from a woman on her knees, tending to a bonsai tree that appears to be bearing tiny fruit. Clothed in oddly plain robes, the hair done in a relatively simple style that leaves a part of its impressive length hanging down her back, it isn't until she turns that it's obvious it's Lady Diya. Her usual impassive mask is absent, leaving behind something rich in quiet and melancholy.
"Lady Diya." Sei's voice comes out sounding flat and low through the force bubble. "I was not expecting to find you here. Feeling restless?"
"Haut Sei," Diya says, her voice a sigh, but not an answer. "There's no one else here. The force bubble is hardly necessary. Please."
There's a moment's amused silence, and then the force bubble shimmers away, revealing a woman perched in a float chair. A woman of striking beauty -- golden hair at least as long as Diya's, trailing down to pile around her feet, features almost uncannily symmetrical and painstakingly chosen. Her ethereal beauty is even more shocking at a glance than Diya's, somehow -- like a painting that's never seen the sun. No more artful, but more beautiful for how deeply the light covets it.
"Nostalgic for older times?" Without the force screen, Sei's voice comes out as clear as Diya's, sounding like a struck bell. "It has been some time. But you hardly need a force bubble anymore yourself, Lady Diya. The impressions I've seen you do are remarkable."
Diya stands up slowly, her plain gardening robes sweeping around her as she does. Her hair sways in a satin black curtain over her back. "That isn't what I'm nostalgic for."
"Are you so sure it's not just the one?" Slowly, Sei steps off her float chair, her hair cascading down to the floor and trailing behind her. "Five years is hardly any time at all."
Diya doesn't flinch, but there's something jumpstart-stalling about the way she moves when Sei steps towards her -- at first forward as though to meet her, but then drawing back, hands gathered to her chest. She drops her gaze for only a moment.
"Time flows much more slowly outside of Eta Ceta," she says softly. There's a bitter undertone to it. The silence between them expands. Then: "I wrote you."
"And I wrote you back," Sei says smoothly. Her own expression is elfin, but hardly unreadable. She smiles slightly, her eyes bright. Diya looks stricken.
"That was the seal of the Star Créche on that envelope. Not yours."
Sei merely gestures with one open hand, as if to say what do you want from me? Diya's voice sounds oddly choked.
"You didn't even return my condolences."
That does draw Sei's brows down, her mouth slightly pinched. There's a flicker of mirrored hurt on her face. "My duties as Handmaiden demanded much of me when it came to the funeral."
"Which I was not even permitted to attend," Diya says through her teeth, and then her voice falters slightly. "Were you really so busy you could not spare the time for a simple message? Even afterward? After she was gone, I -- " Her voice breaks. "I didn't have anyone else."
"I thought you wanted to get off planet," Sei says airily. Diya's hands wrench in the front of her robes.
"Not like this."
Sei smiles slightly. It isn't much of a sympathetic smile. "What terrible luck you were culled before you could go off to Rho Ceta with her, then."
"How?" Diya's voice is quiet, but uncannily raw. "How can you take my life so lightly when this has robbed me of everything?"
Sei's voice goes cool. "You're not the only one who was robbed, were you? You two were the ones who decided to leave."
…and that's all they get to hear before it's time to make a quiet retreat, which they do, but just barely.
EAVESDROPPING TEAM SIGMA: Lapis Lazuli & Vex'ahlia
Roll 1: Get back to quarters without getting caught - SUCCEED
Roll 2: Get extra intel - FAIL
As Lapis and Vex are sneaking into the science/medical complex, they'll overhear the following conversation in the science complex by the genetics wing, marked by the screaming bird insignia of the Star Crèche:
Two sets of footsteps echo quickly through the hall of the genetics wing -- long strides, the other quick, hurried, trying to keep up. The voices are hushed.
Two sets of footsteps echo quickly through the hall of the genetics wing -- long strides, the other quick, hurried, trying to keep up. The voices are hushed.
"Lady Diya," Amai's voice sounds breathlessly, "wait --"
"Wait? Now you want to wait?" Diya hisses. "You aborted the first one, as I recall. Now you want to preserve the endeavor?"
"What if we just -- told Haut Sei? Then we could share the full extent of our research, make better of the project -- "
There is abrupt click and squeal as Diya stops and pivots, and Amai almost walks right into her, immediately jumping back.
"Absolutely not," Diya hisses. "You think the Handmaiden of the Star Créche will pardon the unauthorized use of ba genetic material -- and with hardly anything to show for it?"
"But I thought you and she -- "
"You thought we what." Diya's voice is flat. Amai shrinks slightly.
"That you knew each other."
"That guarantees nothing." A sharp inward breath. "Listen to me, ghem-Soren. This is not up for debate. If you want to keep your career, you'll do as I say. All existing cultures are to be disposed of. Not in these incinerators -- the medbay. Haut Sei will see our work on the gene complexes -- nothing more."
…and that's all they get to hear before it's time to make a quick exit.

building light
Roll 1: Complete the hard-light device by the end of the month - FAIL
Satya and Pearl get to hard work with the R&D labs on completing a hard-light mapping device based on Satya's own technology. Hard-light mapping would considerably speed up the process of construction on the Star Gate Project once they have gathered the necessary materials. Unfortunately, Pearl and Satya run into complications when it comes to properly allocating a power source both powerful enough and compatible with the device. Small-scale tests have been successful, but it will take some more time to complete.

mystery plot
Roll 1: Get back to barracks undetected - FAIL
Roll 2: Gain extra intel - SUCCEED
Remember, guys: you signed a waver.
Lapis takes Pearl back to the science complex (I assume, because Lapis loves sneaking, but really, whatever works for you guys) and if they creep into the genetics wing, they'll overhear the following from one of the labs:
The lab in the genetics wing is dimmed, the Haut Sei's iridescent force bubble casting its own glow.
The lab in the genetics wing is dimmed, the Haut Sei's iridescent force bubble casting its own glow.
"Is this the extent of your progress on the gene complexes, then?" Sei's voice comes through the force bubble in a low, flat timbre. Still, she does not sound terribly impressed.
"Thus far." Diya's tone is clipped, borderline defensive. "As you know, this outpost has been crippled by the epidemic. And the war -- "
"Has little bearing on the workings of the Star Crèche," says the force bubble dryly. "Interesting work so far, Lady Diya, I will grant you that. Your method of reincorporation of exotic DNA into human gene complexes is certainly innovative, using -- what was it?"
"Fusion," Diya responds brusquely. "A Gem trait. Dormant in their organic form, but there's activity on a cellular level. I was able to replicate the protein reformation. To an extent."
"To an extent," Sei echoes, deceptively neutral. "Credit where credit is due, Lady Diya. But after nearly three months, even with the unfortunate setbacks of this plague…I was expecting something rather more complete. I know you're working with ghem, but I thought perhaps with your leadership…or is it a question of resources? Has the Star Crèche not provided enough?"
"I was on the verge of sending a request to the Star Créche," says Diya, sounding like someone who's well aware she's being slowly backed into a corner and looking for a way out. "For the authorization to use ba genetic material to begin trials."
"You would have been denied." There's a trace of scorn in that oddly flat voice. "Testing this level of genetic manipulation on the ba? That isn't what they're for, Lady Diya. You should know that. Untested, potentially unstable complexes? A waste of time at conception, all else aside."
Diya is beginning to sound frustrated. "Then where, exactly, do you suggest we begin trials?"
"I should think it would have occurred to you already. Or had you not thought to ask more of the exotics than mere samples?" There's a soft sound that comes through the force screen scrambled, maybe a breath of a laugh. "Gene therapy is a much more stable method, not to mention faster. Accelerating fetal development -- something we try to avoid with the ba -- only sharply raises the risk of complication. But your exotics? They are the most likely to successfully respond to these reincorporated gene complexes, considering they're the source. And I'm sure there must be one or two who would leap at the chance at regaining any of those dormant traits. Or have I misinterpreted their dossiers?"
Diya starts to answer, but then immediately falls into sharp silence.
"Ba Talim," Diya and Sei say at once, but Diya's voice dies off and recoils at the end. "Ba Talim," Sei repeats smoothly, "please go out into the hall and tell me what you see."
…and that's all you get to hear before one of Haut Sei's ba comes out into the hall and spots you. Too late for an escape now -- Diya and Sei, still in her force bubble, are soon to follow. Sorry, ladies, you are busted.
Sei was already planning to announce to the exotics that they were starting trials for a new kind of gene therapy, but since you two are so eager, you get to be two of the first in the trials, and no, this is not an offer you get to refuse. It does come with risk, of course -- it's entirely untested -- but Lapis, Diya knows how badly you want to be a Gem again. Pearl must surely miss being a Gem as well. They now have a way that could put you just a little bit closer to that.
Pearl and Lapis now have the perk Gene Therapy.
Sei and Diya ensure that Pearl and Lapis return directly to the exotics' quarters, but they'll be expecting you in the medbay.
+3 LP to Pearl & Lapis
lab assistants
With Kaidan, Natasha, Satya and Deanna working in the labs and being increasingly brought into the fold, they're learning much more about the Star Gate Project, at least on a technical level.
Aside from Satya's hard-light mapping technology, they have laid out the most crucial parts needed to build it: high-precision electromagnetic bearings to hold up the Necklin rods and spin them by a magnetic field for reduced friction; high-quality seals and pumps to create the necessary vacuum required for precise jump-plotting; something generating EM shielding to prevent interference, a problem unique to creating a Necklin field of this size and in this environment; and high-precision controls and controls software based on those used in existing jump ships, modifications for which are underway.

Well, this was a rollercoaster.
With Byerly acting as agent provocateur, he, Natasha and Kaidan are covertly working to sabotage the Cetagandan effort to get to Micah. Meanwhile, everyone else is focused on the mission -- except for Miles. Miles stops to help a stranger in desperate need, while Wash goes on ahead -- which proves to be a fatal mistake, as Kurt and Byerly manage to outstrip them despite Byerly trying to slow things down. Natasha and Kaidan do manage to let Lakshmi and William get ahead of them, but ultimately, Kurt and Byerly get to Micah first, along with a couple of ghem squads. The brilliant and very confused and alarmed astrophysicist is taken by the Cetagandans back to their base.
Congratulations, exotics: you get to meet the good doctor.
Please comment if you have any questions! NPC starters will go up for each mission top-level with the IC log as usual, and, as always, here are the rolls for this event. All rolls are d20 unless noted otherwise; the skill ratings of 1-4 are converted into modifiers of -1 to 2. The number of people in each group is also added to the total modifier.
And a big special thanks also to Wyn (
