BARRAYAR'S NEXT TOP GHEM MODEL: WHO WORE IT BEST?
I said I was going to make a poll out of this, and I wasn't joking.
Art is just as much a competitive sport as it is, well, art among ghem ladies, and each exotic requesting a little makeover for the party was a challenge to all of them. So, naturally, a winner must be decided, so that the ghem ladies in question can be appropriately smug and triumphant about it.
(This is only being posted with Sonia's account because she's the only one with a paid which is APPARENTLY REQUIRED FOR MAKING POLLS)

JASPER (stompadour)
Where the ghem ladies produced robes large enough to fit Jasper is a mystery, but her size has managed to pose little obstacle to their fashion show. Rather than try to make her appear more diminutive, her outfit elegantly highlights her height and muscular build. Platformed sandals with elaborate patterns etched into the sides only add to her height. They cloak her in layered robes of yellow, gold and red, subtly patterned with flames in fine gold thread. Jasper's hair simply could Not Be Tamed, so instead the ghem ladies stuck a pretty golden comb in it and gave Jasper a large boa made of synthetically designed rabbit fur in a creamy color to match her hair. The ghem ladies find the patterns on Jasper's skin beautiful and so her facepaint is relatively sparse, in cream white and red decorations meant to accentuate her gem. Her perfume is a cinnamon and musk blend, softened with just a hint of vanilla.
NATASHA (natalia_vdova)
When the ghem ladies have finished with their work, Natasha is clothed in dark robes that billow around her legs, the outermost layer subtly patterned with matte black roses against sleek black silk, and her underrobes layer from a charcoal gray just underneath the outermost layer to a deep crimson as the innermost. Her hair is left down, but curled to picture-perfect frame her face, a single decorated comb in silver and black tucked in the back. She's anointed with a rose-civet blend perfume to match the pattern and add a sultry undertone to the dark colors. Her facepaint is relatively simple, a mask of white over her brow that fades to red over her cheekbones.
DARKSTALKER (threemoons)
The ghem ladies solve the obvious problem of human clothes not fitting a dragon's body with their own brand of creativity. Darkstalker's small entourage of ghem ladies take it upon themselves personally to outfit him in style for the party, draping him in a lace-tulle cape embroidered in silver and layering scarves over it in varying shades of silver and blue. It results in a streamer-like effect, with wisps of fabric coiled around his legs and his tail, almost like a banner. His scales are already beautiful as it is, but each of the ghem ladies, giggling to themselves, paint their clan symbols in fine silver paint, each on a scale on his head. He has no hair, but they place a small woven circlet studded with sapphires over his head. After much careful thought, one of the ladies mixes a fragrance specially for him on this occasion of pine and sandalwood.
DEANNA (durango)
The ghem ladies dress Deanna in flowing robes of light brocade that sweep the floor behind her, a purple underrobe layered over with earth tones ranging to a jade green on top. Each layer has its own delicately stitched pattern that create a beautiful cascade against one another when the layers are all visible. Satin ribbons are woven through Deanna's hair, long enough that they trail from her hair like streamers. Her face paint is somewhat more vibrant, a shimmer of glitter brushed over her eyebrows and along the outer edges of her eyes. She's perfumed with what she's told is a very popular scent on Eta Ceta right now – cedar with gardenia and orange blossom.
LAPIS (mirrortide)
The ghem ladies have a field day with Lapis. Out go the halter top and skirt (and directly into the wash, good God) and in come a whole host of jewel tones. Lapis's robes are layered in all the colors of the sea, with innermost underrobe a deep purple, ranging through cerulean and turquoise, with an overrobe of shimmering aqua, almost lace-weight over the brocade. Lapis's robes are open-backed to show off her gem, and only around knee-length and flare out, a bit fluttery around the hem. A few small combs are tucked into her hair, one on each side, with dangling silver chains. The ghem ladies do force her into shoes, but they're merely lacy silver sandals. Her cheeks are decorated with swirls of silver laid over purple blended seamlessly into her natural skin tone, and they perfume her with a minty jasmine blend.
KAIDAN (standsentinel)
Kaidan is dressed up in subdued, blue-toned dark hues, but belted at the waist with a wide black sash with a sleek satiny finish and a pattern of chrysanthemums stitched in deepest navy blue. His overrobe is matte black and flows around him, and his feet are clad in understated black sandals. With Kaidan they seem to be taking a minimalist approach; his facepaint is a simple deep blue mask over his brow, faded to black at the temples, and they perfume him with a blend of lavender and patchouli.
WASH (protocol)
Wash gets a lighter treatment. The ghem ladies who have appointed themselves his personal sartors dress him in soft colors, layers of pale yellow and powder blue brocade over a charcoal gray underrobe, with a matching pair of soft-soled shoes. His robes are a little shorter, cut at just above the ankle, with wide sleeves. They go for an equally delicate look with his facepaint, a mask of silver over his brow that fades into a soft, deep blue down his cheeks and the ridge of his nose. The corners of his eyes and his cheekbones are dusted with silver glitter. For his perfume, they go slightly bolder: a musk with hints of coffee and mint.
YORK (infailtration)
The same ghem ladies who dressed Wash get right to work on York, dressing him in robes that don't flow so much as sway, with narrower sleeves. His underrobe is a charcoal gray to match Wash's, covered in layers of tea-brown and paler shades of forest green. A wide sash of charcoal gray brocade serves as a belt and matches his soft-soled shoes. For his face paint, they go with a wide swathe of metallic silver painted diagonally over his face, covering up the scarring on the left side. An intricate geometric pattern in earth tones helps draw attention away from his bad eye. For a finishing touch, they anoint him with a blend of cedar wood and tea tree.
SYMMETRA (symmetricks)
The ghem ladies are delighted to work with a woman of such beauty. They especially fawn over Satya's hair, braiding it into coils that hang on either side of her head and held in place by jeweled barrettes. Satya gets a more avant-garde look -- bright layers of turquoise and gold under a sheer overrobe with just one long sleeve over her robotic arm. Bold, geometric patterns in metallic gold and white are painted over her face, and she is adorned with a delicate blend of jasmine and vanilla.
