[ march ii ooc info/signups ]
SIGNUPS ARE NOW CLOSED
Signups will close at midnight PST on March 16th (aka whatever is in my inbox when I wake up on the 17th) so that I have a day to write up the results and the log.
For the record, you guys can absolutely take perks before signing up for a mission (provided you have the LP). If there happens to be a perk-related mission you want in on, you can slide right on under the wire there.
If you haven't learned your lesson, you should know by now: nothing is ever easy on Barrayar. Just as the cold finally begins to recede into the damp beginnings of spring, the Barrayaran flu hit Vorkosigan's District hard, spreading even into the Cetagandan base. Neither side is at an advantage: the Barrayarans have little access to modern medicine, and the Cetagandans have no prior exposure at all to the virus. The relief supplies brought by Ezar and Prince Xav to the Barrayaran camp ease things a little, and the Cetagandans manage to develop a vaccine, but by mid-month, the plague is reaching its apex, and dozens have already died between the camp, the village, and the base.
It's become increasingly clear that the Cetagandans' wormhole research is the key to getting all the outsiders home, but they're missing crucial pieces -- pieces that the Betan scientist Doctor Micah Niadem could provide. Both sides rush to see where they're hiding in Vorkosigan Vashnoi, but the Cetagandans get the upper hand on this one, getting even an exact address. Thankfully, Byerly was able to pass along the information to Miles -- so now, both sides have equal intelligence.
barrayar
The ill in the camp and in Riverfall are recovering, slowly, but the flu is still spreading, and people are still getting sick. They've already exhausted the medical supplies Xav and Ezar brought, and even as the weather clears up, it's still damp -- and people are still developing pneumonia, a near-certain death sentence without modern medicine. They're badly undermanned, with little to spare, but Piotr orders every able body to organize into parties for a raid for medical supplies. It's risky, but at this point, no more risky than leaving everything to hope and chance.
He dispatches several teams to Vorkosigan Vashnoi as well, because he knows that if the Cetagandans get to Micah first, then they could well do much, much more than just build something to send the outsiders home -- if that is, in fact, their real intention. But aside from what happens with Micah, what intelligence Byerly has passed on so far has made one thing clear to Piotr: they need more informants on the Cetagandan side. So if you have any ties to anyone on the other side, if you know someone personally or someone who might be sympathetic, Piotr wants to hear about it. Any intelligence about the Cetagandans' wormhole device is vital.
Amidst all the doom and gloom, Sonia decides to try and bring a little levity to the camp by hosting a makeshift little art show. The Princess can often be seen with her old antique camera, but she rarely shows her work to anyone else -- until now. She hangs up some of her work for display, but that isn't the entire point of the art show -- she wants everyone to contribute whatever they might have in the way of art, whether it be drawings, music, poetry, stories -- anything. It's meant to be a night of sharing, an exchange, a gesture of solidarity and closeness to one's comrades.
cetaganda
With Ratchet and Natasha's help, the Cetagandans were able to synthesize a vaccine for the flu, and while they've slowed the spread of the virus with a quarantine, the base is undermanned all around and it isn't airtight, so to speak. The problem now lies in distributing the vaccine to the rest of the base without getting them sick.
Zahal dispatches several of his own squads to Vorkosigan Vashnoi to Micah's known location, with instructions to take them by force if need be -- they are, after all, sympathetic to the Barrayarans. Meanwhile, back at the labs, they're pushing the wormhole device project -- what they are now calling the Star Gate Project -- as far as they can on their own. With Symmetra's help, the Cetagandans are trying to build a device for hard-light mapping based on the technology from her world, which would speed along the design and construction of the device considerably. They're also educating the lab assistants in all of the most crucial parts and materials they know that they need so far -- but of course, the neurological research still has a ways to go. They're still developing their theory of neural netting and how a Necklin field might directly interact with the human brain without a jump implant. They are always open to volunteers to help with this research, of course.
On the 26th, the Haut Sei Navarr arrives at the Cetagandan base. This is clearly a big deal to the Cetagandans, because those that are well enough to be scrambling around preparing for her arrival are, well…scrambling. They keep her in quarantine aboard her ship for a few days, however, until she has been vaccinated and cleared to enter. The base hurriedly puts together a formal reception for the Handmaiden to the Star Crèche, which is not a party so much as that -- a ritualized receiving of her presence, so rarely seen beyond Eta Ceta. The haut lady is hardly seen, however -- she travels in an opaque force bubble, with a small entourage of servitors, each as aesthetically beautiful as anything from Cetaganda, though they are curiously hairless, and referred to only as the ba.
missions
Each individual mission/plot opportunity is determined by signups and RNG, and most of them will net you some LP. If you haven't seen it yet, here's the post explaining the RNG system I use for the game. (Don't worry, all the dice-rolling is my work, you guys only need to sign up!) Scene-setting starters will be put up on the event log for each mission, and unless it's specifically an NPC-based thread, we'll only toss NPC tags into mission threads on request.
Mission signups are in the comments below. Signing up for any of these missions (or any missions ever) is OPTIONAL. You can have your character hang back at the camp if you don't feel like participating in a plot mission, so don't feel obligated. Signups close March 16th at midnight PST (read: until I wake up in the morning on the 1st), assuming they don't fill up before then, so that I have a day to write up the results.
N.B. Much like last month, while the Vorkosigan Vashnoi missions are PVP missions, it doesn't necessarily place them in direct contact with one another -- if and how your teams run into each other, and the exact details of how the missions resolve, are all up to you.
Also, I just want you guys to remember: you were the ones who asked for hard choices.
MISSIONS: BARRAYAR
1) Infected +2 LP
SKILLS: N/A
You've caught the Barrayaran flu, and it is unpleasant. For nonhuman characters, exactly how it affects them is up to you, but either way, you're out of commission for at least a week. You get 2 LP for taking this mission, but you are ineligible to sign up for any other missions this round (with the exception of Art Fair). Signups are unlimited.
1. Beth Greene
2. Agent Carolina
3. Agent York
4. Nash Latkje
2) Triage +1 LP
SKILLS: MEDICINE
The Barrayarans desperately need help with triage and providing basic care. It'll be exhausting, and you put yourself at risk of infection, and not everyone survives -- but they need the help. Signups are unlimited.
1. Ratchet
3) Art Fair +1 LP
SKILLS: N/A
Sonia's looking for any kind of art to share and raise morale, so if you have anything you're willing to share, she'll gladly have it. Please specify what your character is submitting in your signup!
1. Beth Greene
2. Lavernius Tucker
3.
4. Lakshmi Bai
4) Field Medicine +2 LP
SKILLS: PHYSICAL, MEDICINE
Beyond just triage and basic care, they still need more doctors, or as close as they can get, anyway. If you have any kind of expertise in medicine, even field medicine, anything that might be of use in treating the symptoms -- they're still just barely holding over. Up to four outsiders can give medical assistance.
CHOICE: Supplies are limited, and there just isn't enough to go around. Do you treat the younger patient with the severest symptoms, or the elderly patient who seems like they may be on the verge of recovery?
1. Ratchet
2. Miles Vorkosigan
3. Duv Galeni
4. Morgan Jones
5) Raid: Medical Supplies
SKILLS: STEALTH, MEDICINE
With the relief supplies exhausted, it's time to exhaust their only option. The Cetagandan patrols have changed since their last infiltration, but they're also severely undermanned, so after a preliminary scouting party returns, it's time to infiltrate the medbay and make off with what you can. Up to six outsiders can participate in this mission.
CHOICE 1: You have a shot at the Cetagandans' entire supply of the vaccine. Do you leave any for the thousands sick on base, or do you take it all?
CHOICE 2: The timing is tight. You only have time to grab a substantial amount of one kind of drug: do you take the analgesics to give the suffering pain relief, or the antibiotics to give those a shot with pneumonia at recovery?
CHOICE 3: On your way out, you encounter a very ill ghem soldier in obvious need of help. Do you stop to assist him, or do you just get the hell out of dodge?
1. Miles Vorkosigan
2. Daryl Dixon
3. Agent Washington
4. Lavernius Tucker
5. Duv Galeni
6. Lucy Preston
6) Rat Race (PVP)
SKILLS: STEALTH, PHYSICAL, PERSUASION
You arrive at Vorkosigan Vashnoi, hoping to beat the Cetagandans to Micah -- if they haven't been taken already. You at least have the address and the names of the people protecting them, but even if you do make it there in time, you'll need proof of your alliance with the Barrayarans to convince them to go.
CHOICE: You see someone in need of immediate help in your mad rush to Micah's location. Do you stop to help them and jeopardize the whole mission, or do you put the mission first?
1. Miles Vorkosigan
2. William
3. Agent Washington
4. Lakshmi Bai
7) Connections
This isn't a mission signup, per se, nor an actual commitment to anything, but if your character knows someone on the other side and plans to step forward to tell Piotr about it, sign up here.
MISSIONS: CETAGANDA
1) Infected +2 LP
SKILLS: N/A
You've caught the Barrayaran flu, and it is unpleasant. For nonhuman characters, exactly how it affects them is up to you, but either way, you're out of commission for at least a week. You get 2 LP for taking this mission, but you are ineligible to sign up for any other missions. Signups are unlimited.
2) Triage +1 LP
SKILLS: MEDICINE
The Cetagandans are still falling prey to the virus and are desperately in need help of with triage and setting up a quarantine. It'll be exhausting, and you put yourself at risk of infection, and not everyone survives -- but they need the help. Signups are unlimited.
1. Kaidan Alenko
2. Lapis Lazuli
3. Natasha Romanoff
4. Vex'ahlia
5. Ratchet
6. Byerly Vorrutyer
3) Vaccine Run +2 LP
SKILLS: MEDICINE
They have a vaccine, but they need to get it to the uninfected population as quickly as possible -- without spreading more of the virus. You'll just have to hope it works. Up to two exotics can participate.
CHOICE: Officers rank as a higher vaccination priority than their subordinates, but there's a whole squad of ghem soldiers much more likely to encounter the disease on their patrols. If you only have a limited supply of the vaccine, who do you give it to?
1. Deanna Troi
2. Darkstalker
4) Eavesdropping +2 LP
SKILLS: STEALTH
Time to do your sneaky thing, exotics. The more time passes, the more evident it is that strange things are going on behind the scenes, and the undermanned night patrols make it all the easier. Just make sure you don't catch anything while you're sneaking around. There is room for up to four exotics on this mission.
1. Vex'ahlia
2. Lapis Lazuli
3. Tarn
4. Natasha Romanoff
5) Building Light +2 LP
Prerequisite: Lab Assistant or a Mechanical Engineering rating of 3 or higher
SKILLS: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
The ghem scientists are working with Satya to build a device capable of hard-light mapping, based on her own world's technology. How quickly they can complete it, though, is dependent on how much help they get. There is room for up to two exotics to participate.
1. Symmetra
2. Pearl
6) Rat Race (PVP) +2 LP
SKILLS: STEALTH, PHYSICAL, PERSUASION
You arrive at Vorkosigan Vashnoi, hoping to beat the Barrayarans to Micah -- if they haven't reached them already. You have the address and the names of the people protecting them, but even if you do make it there in time, you'll need to convince Micah to go with you, or otherwise take them by force.
CHOICE: You see someone in need of immediate help in your mad rush to Micah's location. Do you stop to help them and jeopardize the whole mission, or do you put the mission first?
1. Kaidan Alenko
2. Byerly Vorrutyer
3. Natasha Romanoff
4. Kurt Ambrose
7) MYSTERY PLOT +3 LP
SKILLS: STEALTH
This is an RNG-based grab-bag mission – you don't know exactly what it'll be or how it will wind up affecting your character, but it will be exciting and plot-important! Up to two exotics can participate, but we'll need you to sign this waiver surrendering your fate to the RNG gods.
1. Pearl
2. Lapis Lazuli
As usual, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
